Using the five basic food guidelines, Lisa Young, nutritionist and faculty member of NYU, came up with a strategy for people to get and stay slim without deprivation.

  1. Mind your mouthfuls. – focus on the amount of carbohydrates or fat you consume.
  2. Add first, then subtract. – before you take anything away, stock up on fruits and veggies.
  3. Negotiate your cut backs. – decrease your [portions of junk food.
  4. Pack in protein. – this can make you feel full.
  5. Forget white flour. – this can give your body nothing but empty calories.
